August 30th - Friday

RAH Panel OK - I went to some panels today. First up was Heinlein 101, "The who, when, where, what, and most important, why of reading Robert A. Heinlein." These guys must breathe RAH - they can reel off dates of publication without checking their notes. It was a good panel -- even if they did discuss SiaSL too much (not one of my favorites) -- and they had handouts for the audience. Actually, I went to this just so I could see who I was having dinner with tonight :)

Second panel was Humor: What Makes Us Laugh? And the only reason I went to this was because of Pratchett. Humor in SF Panel

Pohl, Steele, Sawyer Steele, Karen, Sawyer - My 2 favorite male SF authors :) Grabbed something to eat, and then met up with Jan and JD for the panel called Dream Machines Made Real: Science Fiction Technologies We Can Do Now, with Frederik Pohl, Robert J. Sawyer and Allen Steele. After the picture with Steele and Sawyer, I asked Pohl to pose with me -- he said no problem and put his arm around me. Just as JD was taking the picture, this BITCH from Hour 25 web-radio walked in front of Pohl and started talking to him. She couldn't wait 10 seconds. She was important. That's OK. I'll have a drink with her boss at LosCon in November and let him know how she treats the public.

The day's gone! It's late afternoon already!

Time to get ready for the Heinlein Society dinner. Showered and spiffed up, we (JD, E and I) walked to the Eulipia Restaurant for drinks and appetizers at 6:30 - dinner was supposed to be at 7:30. Supposed to be. They finally led us to the upstairs room at about 8 - and there are place cards. We can't sit together. Greg Bear and family are at my table. And look who I ended up next to ...

RAH Dinner - Niven and Me RAH Dinner - JD and E waving
RAH Dinner - Robert Silverberg RAH Dinner - The Bear family (from green shirt, leftwards)

The food, while very good, was just too long in getting to our tables. We sat there for 15 minutes before they even put bread and butter on the table. Another half hour goes by, and the 'Salad of Endive and Arugula with Peas, French Breakfast Radish & Hazelnut Vinagrete' finally shows up. Another 30 minutes, and we get 'Starter Platters of Roasted Whole Artichoke, Oysters on the Half Shell and Grilled Shrimp and Scallop Satay'. People are *not* happy. People are looking at their watches. And we still have the main course and the program to go through. I was never asked if I wanted anything to drink, besides water.

Finally the main course shows up -- mine was 'Grilled Ribeye Steak with Garlic Mash and Cabernet Jus. Other choices were 'Cashew Encrusted Seared Salmon with Fingerling Potatoes and Lemon Beure' or 'Chicken Breast with Brie and a Roasted Garlic Sauce marinated in Dijon' or 'Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli with Toasted Almonds and Brown Butter'. While they were serving dessert (Chocolate Lava Cake, Peach & Plum Cobbler, Lemon and Lime Pie or Creme Brulée), David Silver said that they would have the program and *very short* speeches, because of all the delays caused by the restaurants. Charlie Brown of Locus talked about RAH, and then they showed the Landing On The Moon TV news segment from 1969 with Walter Cronkite, Arthur Clarke and Heinlein.

As we were leaving the room (at 11 PM!), the waiters showed up with coffee.

Freas On our way into the Fairmont to check out the parties, we ran into Kelly and Laura Freas -- they were on their way to Kelly's birthday party in the art room, but he didn't know it :)
