August 27th - Tuesday

JD Singin' in the Sunshine Nadia, Ara, Star and JD o/~ San Francisco, here we come o/~

We caught the free DASH bus in front of hotel that took us to the train station. I hadn't been on a train since I was 11, so I was a little excited. Since there were 5 of us, they sold us the equivalent of a weekly pass, and saved us $2 a person round trip.

I was disappointed that there was no diner car that we could all sit around a table together, but at least we got to sit on the top part of the double-decker all in a row. The bottom level was used for mostly bicycles and just a few seats. ... Train to SF

SF Seals Ninety minute later, after umpty-ump stops, we rolled into San Francisco. Then we had an adventure trying to figure out which light rail would take us down into the Wharf area. Got on the right one, stopped at an underground terminal and took the escalators up to the street. Walked a block to catch the trolley to Pier 39. Had our dollar ready, but when the trolley rolled up, the guy said everyone on for free -- it was a training run. Off at Pier 39, and walked down to see the world-famous sea lions. Noisy buggers. (Web cam is at http://www.pier39restaurants.com/cam.htm.)

Then to the Sea Lion Café, for a window seat overlooking Alcatraz - and where they let you draw all over the table with crayons. JD does a Pretty Good Drawing of Fred Flintstone Chow-daaaa!!

Ara Disembarking JD Disembarking Ara, JD, Nadia and Star took a cruise after lunch -- out under the bridge (JD took a short video with his camera) and around Alcatraz. I cruised the shops while they boated -- bought some fudge, found stuff for JD to buy for his NY friends, and then found a store called Chocolate Heaven. Aaaahhhhhh. Went to greet them as they disembarked ...

Trekked across the wharf front for the main purpose of coming to San Francisco ...

It's a good-sized shopping complex - and they hand out free chocolate at every store :) But we still had to buy some. Had some drinks and tried on silly hats while we were cooling down -- it was hot for the City!

Ghiradelli's

SF Chocolate Bear Trekked back along the wharf front going past all the cheesy souvenir shops and more chocolate shops. Here I am telling Mr. Chocolate some shocking gossip ...

Ya know, sometimes it seems like all we do is eat -- dinner time at The Crab House at Pier 39. Aha - a place with a patio - Karen can smoke. Nope. In the City, you can't even smoke in a restaurant patio. So we go inside -- where -- it's so damn smoky from their cooking fires you can't see across the room. Make sense to me. Yeahright. It was also WAY too warm in there. JD & I had to get the souvenir drinks of course -- we wanted the glasses. Mine was mango and vodka and something else. Blech. Was horrible. And we're getting tired. SF Dinner SF Dinner

Off to catch the trolley, the light rail and the train home. We ended up on the last car. It swayed. Back and forth. For 90 minutes. I'm starting to feel sick. Will we ever get back to San Jose? Finally we make it back. No free bus -- it's too late. We get confusing directions from several locals, and finally just start walking in the direction of the hotel. I'm still feeling sick. The neighborhoods we're walking thru get rougher and rougher. Darker and darker. Less and less traffic. And we look so TOURISTY. Shit. JD and I go on alert. The other three don't see anything wrong, occasionally lagging behind until JD urges them to keep up. Walking under the freeway, JD and I hear voices coming from the bushes. Holy shit. I start walking faster, ready to cause bodily harm with heavy shopping bag. Either that or ready to throw up all over anyone who comes near me. JD runs back to push the others to walk faster. Finally the streets start looking familiar. Our feet hurt, the night is hot, we're tired, but we made it.

I sit on the couch, sipping water trying to settle my upset stomach, while Star moves her things from the suite to her room. Star closes the door. I head for the bathroom.

Never mix mango and calamari and swaying trains.
