RWalotsky: Ara, I did a good cover for Science Ficiton Book Club for Jack Vance, they made a poster out of it. RELM Muse: For the Demon Princes? Nycrawlor: just kidding Araiused: Cool! RWalotsky: Yes, Muse. That was it! RELM Muse: I have that! I haven't taken the poster out of the shrinkwrap with the book yet... JDipale: <--Member of Sci Fi Book Club :) RELM Muse: I'll do that later! RWalotsky: Just ran down to find the book because I forgot the name!!! Araiused: You mean, when you buy the book you get the poster?? RELM Muse: Whose story is it for? RWalotsky: Currently working on cards for Wizards of the Coast. RELM Muse: Yeah, Ara, several of the new books are coming with small posters of the covers. JDipale: COOL RELM Muse: Yeah, it's neat! RWalotsky: I think so, Ara. I am not sure how they are doing it. RELM Muse: The two I've gotten so far have been folded to book size and then shrinkwrapped.. RELM Muse: with the book. RELM Muse: Ron, since we may have different people reading this log compared to our... RWalotsky: Muse, I can't remember!@ you going to make me run back downstairs???? I've just fifteen sketches for WOTC RELM Muse: last try at an interview, please tell us how you got started in art. :) RELM Muse: LOL Okay, no, you don't have to go back downstairs. :) RWalotsky: And I've been working on a line of college t-shirts. Also, did a couple of t-shirts for Boot Hill Saloon, Bike RWalotsky: Week in Daytona..../ga RELM Muse: (I know how you feel -- my computer is on the edge between my living room & dining room... JDipale: HOUNDED Gail for it! RWalotsky: Okay, interview time. RELM Muse: Yep. Tell us about the art. ;) RWalotsky: When I started, I was very young when I realized that the One thing that I could do better than anything RWalotsky: else was draw and paint. RWalotsky: So I realized Early on where my strengths lie. I wasn't good at anything else. RWalotsky: I went to the School of Visual Arts for 4 years, and did my first cover aol://9293:Nycrawlor RWalotsky: For Fantasy and Science Fiction Mag in 1967. RWalotsky: /ga RELM Muse: Cool! You know, speaking of t-shirts! JDipale: Do you have a favorite piece of art? (BTW, one of yours) RELM Muse: Only three days left! RELM Muse: Don't miss the T-Shirt Design Contest! RELM Muse: Check it out on our board in the RELM Muse: Cafe Signboard folder! Contest closes RELM Muse: 3/15, so get your digital art going! RELM Muse: Good question, JD! RWalotsky: JD, do I have a favorite piece of art? JDipale: Actually, I really like the one on the T-Shirt RWalotsky: There's a few pieces that have stuck with me, but it's hard to choose- I stay very prolific. Nycrawlor: How do get ideas for your Art, does it just "come to you?" JDipale: People in NYC seem to like it as well RWalotsky: I like what I'm working on at the time. some of the old things do hold up... RWalotsky: NY, I get my ideas for the illustrations by reading the manuscript. Make Thumbnail sketches while I'm reading. RELM Muse: Ron, what about art that isn't a cover? Where do those ideas come from? RWalotsky: For my own work, it's much more spontanious. I've been combining some abstract and figurative work Nycrawlor: so what we see is what you envision, not what the author sees? RWalotsky: And working on a different series of my own paintings... RWalotsky: JD, that was Nature of Pan. RWalotsky: (gail says it's hard to keep up with both screens!) JDipale: Yes! That's it! RELM Muse: (yeah, it's a little odd) RWalotsky: NY, I rarely will talk to the author, unless he has a say in the cover. RELM Muse: I assume that's Pan the God, not Pan the Skillet? Nycrawlor: lol Muse RWalotsky: Which will mean that he's very well known. But I mainly deal with the art directors or editors. RWalotsky: LOLOL! You got it Muse! RWalotsky: But then, a big skillet might work!!!! RELM Muse: LOL JDipale: Who are your biggest influences (spelling?) RWalotsky: NY, yea the author usually fairly surprised. They don't see the cover till it's on the book! RELM Muse: JD is asking about your biggest influences. RWalotsky: JD, there's a lot of illustrators and artists from the past...one of my favorite artist's is Rene Megrette (sp Nycrawlor: Neat, Are they pleased, or have you ever gotten some sour grapes? RELM Muse: (Magritte, in case anybody wants to look him up) RWalotsky: who else? In the illustration field. Paul Lear. RWalotsky: (Thanks Muse!) Techyo: I'm interested in how the flowing picture on your web page came about? RWalotsky: Paul Lear, Paul Klee...I could keep going...Picasso.... RWalotsky: LOL! Tech, that's a friend of ours who did that. Your welcome to e-mail him...I'll send you the address later RWalotsky: Ron loved it!!!!! RELM Muse: I like MC Escher -- I have a 12 foot mural print on my living room wall. Techyo: So the pick is Ron's but the other guy added the flowing? RELM Muse: You did the original art, though, Ron, and the other person animated it? RELM Muse: TMTA, Tech! RELM Muse: Hi Chip! Hi Stan! RWalotsky: (Welcome Stan, all! He's family!!!) RELM Muse: Cool! Araiused: Ny was asking, I think, are the authors generally pleased with your covers? Stan5K: Family, friend and accountant---WOW RWalotsky: Lennon says Hi Stan! (he's here!) RELM Muse: LOLOL RWalotsky: Don't give all our secrets away..... Stan5K: Is Lennon Stage or Audience RELM Muse: I think Lennon is looking over Gail's shoulder. :) RWalotsky: Ara: Yes, they usually are. sometimes I get a call...not long ago when I did the cover RWalotsky: for DonnerJack which Roger Zelazny wrote with the co-author sent me a very nice note. RWalotsky: She said how much she liked the piece for Easton Press. Stan5K: Your picture looks as if you just received your tax papers!! RWalotsky: He's stage....stan. Right behind me. I'm right behind gail talking! RWalotsky: LOL! In the mail!!!! RELM Muse: That's Jane Lindholm, isn't it, Ron? The co-author? RELM Muse: Well, it was the only picture I had! RELM Chip: Related to Megan, Muse? RWalotsky: Yes, Muse. That's right. We should hire you for PR! RELM Muse: No, which is why it's probably the wrong last name. ;) Stan5K: Lets make this a horse race {S Charge RELM Muse: Maybe Lindskold. Stan5K: {S Charge RWalotsky: Better than what we could have come up with ..... RELM Muse: LOL Stan5K: does not work inhere RWalotsky: Stan, behave! RELM Muse: Well, a little con gossip -- I was at the con where she & Zelazny met.. RELM Muse: and they started an affair that night that didn't end. She was the con chair. RELM Muse: And he was the GOH. RWalotsky: Muse, we've had the delight to meet her. Jane is a wonderful person. RELM Muse: Yes, I met her there, too, although I didn't spend much time with her. RWalotsky: I've been friends with Zelazny since I did Lord of Light and darkness. All the original covers for Avon. RELM Muse: So, Ron, how'd you start into SF & Fantasy art? RWalotsky: I sent him the original Lord of Light when I did it years ago because I loved the book so much. RWalotsky: We've had corrospondeance untill he passed away..... RWalotsky: by doing psychedlic posters, it was the closest way to make a living- do what I like to paint. Techyo: Ron comics were some of my first interest in art. Has that ever enter/infulanced your work? BLR WIZ: Hi Ny, Ara, JD,RW, Stan, Tech Techyo: (Methinks the name Stan brought that on ) RWalotsky: I went to the book stores, found the publsihers who were doing the work that I liked. RWalotsky: I read comics when I was growing up constantly. I did two covers for Heavy Metal in the early 80's. RWalotsky: But mainly stayed in Hard covers and paperbacks. RELM Muse: (I was right the second time -- Jane Lindskold.) RWalotsky: (gail writing it down, muse!) RWalotsky: /ga Araiused: Are you working on a new project? RWalotsky: Muse, I'm really pretty prolific. Most of the pieces from the early RWalotsky: 60's have been sold. And I will sell Originals at shows, for collectors...I'd rather have them hanging in some RWalotsky: one's home than in my closet. RELM Muse: Do you sell prints? RWalotsky: I don't believe in holding on, I'll paint till I die. So I always RWalotsky: keep creating new work. Kakaze: play virtual golf, that way you can go nude RWalotsky: I read what they give me, sometime the whole manuscript. RELM Muse: Hi Vasty! RWalotsky: sometimes they give me the readers report. I prefer the manuscript. T83BIRD: I'm glad you said that. I tell my writing students to convey images. RWalotsky: LOL! Kak! RWalotsky: I can't get on the computer to play golf, Gails always on it! I gotta get out sometime... T83BIRD: I work for Bloomsburg University, Sir. Kakaze: ugh, that big yellow thing in the sky is too much for me RELM Muse: T8, I reckon you can call Ron, Ron. Besides, you're older than he is. ;) RWalotsky: I used to teach at Sullivan Community College upstate NY for two years. T83BIRD: I didn't want to presume, Muse. RELM Muse: S'okay, if I can, you can. ;) RWalotsky: I would only teach college kids, because they wanted to not because they had to. Kakaze: does that mean i have to call him mr walotsky? RWalotsky: Muse: Yes! but not very often! Kakaze: didnt someone put part of the bible on a piece of rice? thought i saw it at riplys.. Kakaze: why would you turn one doen? RELM Muse: Why? What makes you decide that? RWalotsky: I turned something down reciently. Didn't want to paint the images they wanted... Kakaze: down even T83BIRD: What makes you say no, Ron? RTisch2147: Good luck with all your ventures, your a very talented artist RWalotsky: but normally, I pretty much do the cover work. RELM Muse: What was it about the images? RWalotsky: Yes, you did see it at rippleys. so did I! RWalotsky: I turned it down becasue it was graphically distastful. comic/erotic art. Kakaze: <--- likes the mirror at ripleys where they tell you to try and curl your tongue. its two way! RELM Muse: Ah, I see. T83BIRD: Good reasons. Araiused: Phew, been a long while that I punted RWalotsky: That just left a bad feeling. RWalotsky: Thanks Charles! RELM Muse: I have to tell you, I painted my first SF art last week. I paint pottery on Fridays... T83BIRD: No fun there, Ara. Kakaze: how do you go from canvas to paper? RELM Muse: and usually do abstracts or landscapes, but I tried my hand at a shuttle on a.. RWalotsky: Did you do it for yourself or a publisher? RELM Muse: strange planet. I'll find out tomorrow how it looks. Techyo: Do you feel you put a lot of you into your art? Or do you get more back? RELM Muse: LOL As my co-leader, Shadow says, I need to have a yard sale for it, Ron. RELM Muse: It's just a hobby. ;) RWalotsky: LOL! Muse! RELM Muse: Well, *yours* isn't a hobby. *Mine* is. ;) BLR WIZ: LOLOL on Leno they showed the Dinasours being wiped out by the Asteroid..... RWalotsky: I get EVerything back from it. I get it back when I'm working on it, that's the most satisfaction. once it's BLR WIZ: It hit Barney.... T83BIRD: Yard sales here would yield no real money. Kakaze: hahaha RWalotsky: Done, I feel satisfied. Kakaze: if only wiz! TAMARAC223: not all asteroids are bad RWalotsky: Good Kak! It's about time! RELM Muse: (on the other hand, I've done some spiffy SF-related beading) RTisch2147: A big love and a good night Ron, say hi to Gail RELM Muse: See ya, RT! RWalotsky: Sorry guys. Getting sloppy. Kakaze: :-) RTisch2147: Hi Gail RELM Muse: Kak, you gotta get a loving spouse. RWalotsky: Hi Rochelle! come up! T83BIRD: Everyone needs help sometimes, Kak. RELM Muse: Have you ever had art stolen? Kakaze: ive been trying to convince rainbow to do it for me, but she wont anymore RTisch2147: We will try would love to see you guys BLR WIZ: Night all, I must be going. Thanks for the chat Ron & Gail... Kakaze: <--- didnt feed her highness at the time she dema... requested it.. RELM Muse: See ya, BLR! Kakaze: night wiz! T83BIRD: Nite BLR TAMARAC223: Night, BLR Araiused: Nite, BLR. Hi GM! GMACJMAC: Hi all T83BIRD: Hi GM RWalotsky: No, I've been lucky that way. Not like some of my firends who have had their art stolen lately. RELM Muse: Hi GM! RELM Muse: ***This is an Other*Worlds*Cafe Event!*** RELM Muse: We're interviewing famous science fiction RELM Muse: and fantasy artist Ron Walotsky! RELM Muse: Click on his picture to find out more about RELM Muse: him and his work! RELM Muse: Yeah, it's happening more lately, it seems. T83BIRD: Does anyone "steal" your style, Ron? Kakaze: all my art is on computer, i keep waiting for it to crash or something Techyo: Related to what Muse just ask I've seen reprints of some of the 60s stuff that was subtilly changed.... RWalotsky: Expecially Don Maitz& Janie wurts who lost 20 plus paintings. RELM Muse: Good question, T8! Araiused: Kak, do you dream? TAMARAC223: Hi, GM Kakaze: not that i know ara Techyo: I'd call that stolen. GMACJMAC: Hi Tam RWalotsky: Plagurism is everywhere... T83BIRD: Unfortunately, yes. RIKnJAK: I gotta go - Involved elsewhare RWalotsky: especially now. They can change it enough so that thec RELM Muse: See ya, RIK! T83BIRD: Nite RIK Kakaze: night rik! TAMARAC223: Nite, RIK T83BIRD: Hi TAM Kakaze: slan slan RWalotsky: copy write doesn't hold up anymore. I don't get bent out of shape, unless it's a complete RWalotsky: Rip off. Araiused: What do you do if you found out someone stole your idea? GMACJMAC: ntie Rik Araiused: Seeya RIK RELM Muse: Let me amplify on Ara's question -- do you ever take action when you find.. RWalotsky: Ideas are hard unless you've got a signature or copy write on it. RELM Muse: a copy? T83BIRD: Better be a first you than a second somebody else. RWalotsky: But there's ways to find out through graphic artist guild. RWalotsky: Or copy write lawyers if you want to spend the money. GMACJMAC: so a bootleg on someones web site of your work doesn't bother you or just to hard to track? RWalotsky: copy right...sorry. T83BIRD: Now that really costs. RELM Muse: GM, good question! RWalotsky: the computer images are nothing like my prints or orignals. If somebody wanted to take the image off the comp Kakaze: i had to deal with that recently. someone took some art that i made and put it on his site. RWalotsky: uter for their own personal use, that's not going to bother me. the dpi is low resolution. Techyo: Do artists include "bit's" in their art to provide copywrite protection like say maps do? Kakaze: i dont mind that they did it, but i do mind that he totally destroyed it RELM Muse: Ron, do you plan to retire someday? Stop painting? RWalotsky: If they took it off and posters were being sold, that's something else. they have a lawsuite on their hands. T83BIRD: I hope not, Ron. T83BIRD: Keep working. Kakaze: bits tech? Techyo: Bit maps was what I meant to say. RWalotsky: Your signature and the copyright mark. sometimes I'll have initials or my name placed In the painting in stra Kakaze: that is what computer art is RWalotsky: strange places that you wouldn't see right away. Techyo: Bascilly an icon built in. RELM Muse: Tech, that would only work as long as the art was digital, though. RWalotsky: Usually that's protection enough. Techyo: Actually chip makers do it to chips too patt. Techyo: Muse. Kakaze: just use colours that screw up scanners, like they do with the new money coming out Techyo: Ack RELM Muse: Ron, do you plan to retire? Stop painting? Or do you see yourself painting ... RELM Muse: just different things? RELM Muse: LOL Tech1` RWalotsky: No, I'll be painting always. RELM Muse: Are your kids artists? GMACJMAC: I hope so I love your work RWalotsky: that's my first love, that's what keeps me sane. I can't do it on a key board. It's not the same. T83BIRD: The best you've done is always the next one, Muse. It has to be. RWalotsky: Thanks Gmac! Techyo: So it's more a work of love than a job. That's cool. T83BIRD: Otherwise you stagnate or regress. RWalotsky: That's right, Tbird. RELM Muse: Yeah, Tech, nice to make money at what you love. :) Kakaze: computer art isnt done with a keyboard, its done with a mouse or tablet Araiused: Wise words, T! T83BIRD: Thanks, Ara. RWalotsky: Because your name is on it. And if it's published, it will always be out there. You want to keep the level RWalotsky: of your work always pushing, more and more with every paitning. your always learning, that's one thing that RWalotsky: never stops with art. When I'm 90 I'll say I'll only need 10 more years to get it right. RELM Muse: LOL More than that, Ron, we want to see you painting when you're 150! T83BIRD: True, Ron. I tell my students they will never have "learned" how to write. RWalotsky: See what I know about computers KAK! It's still not a brush, but that's just me. RWalotsky: LOL! Muse1 Kakaze: you can learn how to paint and write, mastering it is what you can never do T83BIRD: LOL Muse RELM Muse: Actually, there is a brush pointing device to use with a graphics pad. :) GMACJMAC: ron do you have a faverite artist? Techyo: Ron thank you that thought adds a debth to looking at art I'd never considered before. RWalotsky: Darn. RELM Muse: LOLOL RWalotsky: See? I am being pulled tooth and nail towards this! T83BIRD: Kak, my students tend to think of learning as finite. Kakaze: <--- wants to get a wacom tablet to do 2d comp art. theyre too bloody expensice though RELM Muse: You might enjoy it, Ron. :) Techyo: Do you see any problems with computor media that you don't have with canvas? RWalotsky: You might be right Muse. RELM Muse: Ron, GM wants to know if you have a favorite artist. You mentioned invluences.... Techyo: RELM Muse: earlier, what would be your favorite? RWalotsky: Lol! Kakaze: learning is finite, mastering is infinite TAMARAC223: Unfortunate, T. T83BIRD: Yes, TAM. RELM Muse: Um, influences. Araiused: Nope, Kak, to master the learning is infinite. Kakaze: computer media! you need to get dot pitch and all that other stuff just right RWalotsky: I would say I love the old masters and lot of art. I love all types of art. Techyo: (Muse has Techyo disease) T83BIRD: Kak, the point is that they equate the two. RELM Muse: Yeah, Tech! You're contagious! RWalotsky: It's hard to say one artist anymore because you can take a little of each into your own. taht's not cheating RELM Muse: No, I think creative people find inspiration everywhere. It can be hard to say where.. RWalotsky: as long as you make it into your own. that's what early artists used to do. Paint old paintings in the museums Kakaze: <--- still likes bob ross, even though hes dead RELM Muse: an idea came from. RWalotsky: that's how they learned to paint. Techyo: As long as you add something to the whole? RWalotsky: Guys, my fingers are worn to a nub. RWalotsky: Ron's losing his voice....;. RELM Muse: LOL We're just a few minutes away from stopping, Gail & Ron. T83BIRD: Thanks for coming, Ron! RELM Muse: Hang on, and I'll run some announcements. :) Araiused: LOL, it's time for the bubbly RWalotsky: Okay Muse! RELM Muse: Don't miss the T-Shirt Design Contest!
