HOST EBK Astra: Ah pooh :) OWC Mars: for the book DARK DREAMERS at the same time that... OWC Mars: Beth shoots the photo, or is there some other arrangement? BG1818: The ones that I had the most trouble with were Ray Bradbury. He hasn't been very self conscience since he's aged. So he doesn't like to be photographed. BG1818: He is very self conscience, I meant to say StanWiater: No we work totally at different times and often in different spaces--we had ten years to make it appear like it all was put together in a nammer of months. Do you have photos back years and years of some of them? BG1818: Yes I do. Depends on the person. TAMirabile: How do you decide which? BG1818: When I first decided to do this. I went through my files of people that I'd photographed before. To see if I had anything I liked. BG1818: My method was the same rather I pulled old photos or was chosing from new photos. I'd make small prints of my favorites. Then I'd lay them out and see what caught my eye. BG1818: It had to catch my eye and I had to figure out why it caught my eye before I'd decide to use it. A little unrealistic how they managed to build an interactive system OWC Mars: The Difference Engine or HEAVY WEATHER? Darkomik77: that's the beauty of fiction, who cares how realistic? DerHexer: Difference Engine. I haven't read Heavy Weather DerHexer: Well, Dark, it should be somewhat realistic, or at least reasonable, or at least plausible Darkomik77: just so long as it's believable DerHexer: I have trouble suspending my disbelief if it is not reasonable. Maybe that's why I don't like fantasy Darkomik77: I have no trouble suspending my disbelief DerHexer: Good for you Darkomik77: except maybe when it comes to UFOs Darkomik77: or with Whitley Streiber OWC Mars: Well there you go. I think all of us have that line our disbelief just won't cross. Araiused: Streiber is stretching it, isn't he? OWC Mars: It's just a different line for each of us. Araiused: LOL, Ath Darkomik77: no prob with his style of writing Athanor IX: I have more trouble with authors who lack distinct style . Darkomik77: they're easy to follow BLR WIZ: Mars, any more I have trouble with the print size. OWC Mars: I mean, have you ever been reading a OWC Mars: book and run into a clumsy sentence OWC Mars: that stopped you cold? DerHexer: I have trouble w/Asimov's, Clarke's and RAH's later styles. I also have a little trouble w/Jack McDevitt Araiused: Like what,Mars? OWC Mars: Interesting. What's it about McDevitt that blows you away Der. BLR WIZ: I have found some basic spelling errors that made it to print. Athanor IX: My tastes are such that I usually don't pick up books by authors likely to produce such sentences. OWC Mars: Ara...Wilson and Childs who wrote Relic... Darkomik77: I've run into that kind of prose that's awkward but forgivable DerHexer: I think McDevitt has trouble ending his books. The endings are not satisfactory Darkomik77: he's the guy who wrote Resume with Monsters OWC Mars: they have a penchant for phrases like OWC Mars: "the silent underground waterfall OWC Mars: splashed musically against the rocks." Araiused: No distinct style - like Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman OnlineHost: Patterner has entered the room. Darkomik77: nope SlipperyJim7017: hi Patt OWC Mars: Der...it's not that it stops me from OWC Mars: reading... it's just jarring so it throws OWC Mars: me out of the story and I'm left staring OWC Mars: at the sentence. OWC Mars: Patt...we're talking about what breaks "suspension of disbelief" for us. DerHexer: Well, that rarely happens to me. I sort of shrug it off OWC Mars: Where do you draw the line, Patt? Patterner: Really bad science, Mars. Darkomik77: sometimes, when I read & then put the book down when it drags on and on and one Darkomik77: like get on with it already OWC Mars: So...you're not a big King fan then Dark? DerHexer: What can bother me is the author refering to something that he/she hadn't introduced before Darkomik77: I have no prob with King Araiused: Have you read Talisman, Dark? Darkomik77: but others? oh yeh Darkomik77: not yet Araiused: I kind of think it went on and on. OnlineHost: Techyo has entered the room. Araiused: Hey, Tech. Great moral tale OWC Mars: And you didn't think the Stand went on and on and on? DerHexer: Hi tech Darkomik77: that's the same thing with the movie A.I. Araiused: I know I skipped several chapters to find out what the heck is happening. Darkomik77: it just goes on on on OWC Mars: I have to agree with you on A.I. Dark. OWC Mars: They should have ended it, IMHO, about 3/4 of the way through. Darkomik77: spielberg should have stopped with the boy & the blue fairy DerHexer: Was/Is A.I. worth going to the movies for, or should I wait for the video?? OWC Mars: A tragic ending is asking a little much of Speilberg, though, isn't it Dark? Techyo: <=== wonders as well Darkomik77: no reason for the aliens to be there OWC Mars: Video...I don't think it's *at* the first runs any longer. Techyo: Speilburg = 90 of the happiness shows while 10 percent is hidden. DerHexer: 5 minutes and the Victoria's Secret fashion show will be on ABC OWC Mars: And frankly, I'd wait on the video until OWC Mars: it's a 5 day rental at reduced OWC Mars: prices...but that's just my opinion. Araiused: You watch that, Der? Darkomik77: Aldiss thinks this movie is too intelligent for us audience? Techyo: Der, that should be a halloween thing. Techyo: Walcing skellitons. DerHexer: Public service annoucement, Ara Darkomik77: hah OWC Mars: LOLOL, Tech. OWC Mars: Well put sir. Darkomik77: I'd argue with him on that Araiused: With Tech or with Aldiss? Techyo: It ain't right and furthermore it ain't attractive. Darkomik77: Aldiss DerHexer: Sounds like some British arrogance Techyo: Plus they prance like horses? Araiused: I dont think his Super Toys Last all Summer Long has aliens. Techyo: I watched it till it made me ill. Athanor IX: What movie? Araiused: The movie is based on that story. OWC Mars: Okay... Aldiss thinks that A.I. is too OWC Mars: intelligent for the audience? Am I OWC Mars: reading that right? Araiused: AI is based on Aldiss's Super Toys Darkomik77: you read it right mars Darkomik77: I got that from SCIFI news OWC Mars: I don't think it's too intelligent for THIS audience. Quite the opposite. Techyo: Right and didn't he work on the screenplay too? Darkomik77: I don't think so tech Araiused: Dunno, Tech. OWC Mars: If anything it seemed to be a OWC Mars: compilation of themes from asimov OWC Mars: and other golden age authors... Darkomik77: Speilberg did though OWC Mars: with a Kubrick "look"... OWC Mars: and a Speilberg happy ending. Techyo: Well Kubby started it. Darkomik77: happy ending? ugh Darkomik77: totally illogical OWC Mars: And I believe Kubrick would have allowed it to be a tragedy. OWC Mars: But that's just my opinion. Darkomik77: maybe mars Athanor IX: A happy ending for most sci-fi movies is "Financing falls through before start of production." Techyo: ROFL a hugh cenimatic tragedy. Darkomik77: but like Spielberg, he keeps going on & on & on Techyo: Mars, a lot of people agree. Techyo: Even the critics. Techyo: Which would scare me if I were you. Techyo: OWC Mars: Poor Kubrick. Shame he died before he had both those movies in the can, so to speak... OWC Mars: and speaking of being in the can...it's time to wrap this chat up for the evening.
