The opinions expressed in this chat are not necessarily those of The Other*Worlds*Cafe or America Online. RELM Muse: The Other*Worlds*Cafe is pleased to have Diana G. Gallagher (Diana Burke)... DMeriman: hey, DianaBurke: Ready here RELM Muse: and Martin Burke here for a special chat. RELM Muse: Diana, tell us how you got started in writing SF. MartnBurke: here 2 DianaBurke: Very simple. I saw Star Wars at age 31 and that was that T83BIRD: Hi all MartnBurke: I married her RELM Muse: Hi T8! DianaBurke: LOL RELM Muse: LOL Marty! RELM Muse: So, how did you get to the writing part? DMeriman: when writing a ST book, is it commissioned or a freelance submission? DianaBurke: I always wanted to write but just hadn't found anything that ignited the passion DianaBurke: DM: ST is usually by request from the editors DMeriman: are you presented with an outline/story ideas? DianaBurke: but stories are freelance in that authors usually... not always... come up with them DianaBurke: DM: some of the sdult books are done that way DMeriman: do the rights revert back to you or Paramount? MartnBurke: /ga? RELM Muse: Diana, how did you get the very first book published? Did you shop it around for a long time? DianaBurke: All rights belong to publisher and Paramount DMeriman: I assume you have a lit agent? DianaBurke: DM yes DMeriman: How did you hook up? T83BIRD: Will mostly listen. Literature for Children, not Literature for Young Adults, is my field. DianaBurke: Muse: my first novel, The Alien Dark, took 10 years to write and 18 months to sell DianaBurke: T8 I write mostly for middle reader T83BIRD: Ah, so. DianaBurke: DM: I met my agent through SF conventions RELM Muse: How did you get to writing YA? DianaBurke: Right after I sent the Alien Dark manuscript out the first time DianaBurke: Muse: by accident because of ST RELM Muse: Could you elaborate, Diana? DianaBurke: I had pitched to TNG and decided to try books just as Pocket decided to publish YA ST RELM Muse: Cool! RELM Muse: If you have a question for Diana or Marty, RELM Muse: please go ahead and ask. :) DMeriman: Diana, what is your favored method of 'networking' - what has been the most productive course? DianaBurke: Arcade went so well that I was in right place at right time to write Nickelodeon books DianaBurke: DM: cons DMeriman: to this day? RELM Muse: What kind of cons do you attend? Regular SF cons, or Creation? DianaBurke: DM: now through my agent and because I've established myself as an Internediate Reader author DianaBurke: I'm out of the SF loop these days DMeriman: so the work is mostly coming to you now? DianaBurke: Muse: regular SF cons... but not too many recently T83BIRD: Diana, what is your view on "political correctness" and the various "isms"? DianaBurke: DM: mostly. when books are needed for a series, I'm on the contact list at Minstrel/Pocket DMeriman: how do you block out a story - or does it just come to you as you bank on the key-board? DianaBurke: T8: working for Nickelodeon one has to be "PC." DianaBurke: But I don't like it in the extreme T83BIRD: No surprise, Diana. Neither do I. DMeriman: bang RELM Muse: LOL DM DianaBurke: DM: start with basic idea... figure out starting point and then think in linear terms DianaBurke: DM: I bank on keyboard all the time. LOL DMeriman: off the cuff? DMeriman: ok DianaBurke: DM: ideas are sometimes off the cuff MartnBurke: sure as hell I bank/bang RELM Muse: LOL Marty! DianaBurke: Marty: LOl RELM Muse: Welcome to the Other*Worlds*Cafe RELM Muse: chat with Diana G. Gallagher & Marty RELM Muse: Burke! Click on the picture to get more RELM Muse: info about them! DMeriman: any collaberative work? RELM Muse: Oops, I need to change that. There was *supposed* to be a picture.. RELM Muse: in that yellow box. DianaBurke: DM: just the book with Marty. T83BIRD: Diana, my OUR ORBIT on the O*W*C MBs is a spoof, so definitely not PC. DianaBurke: DM: collaborating on a screenplay adaptation with another SF author now DMeriman: goint to try that again or does that put the relationship at risk? DianaBurke: We will if the right project comes along RELM Muse: Marty, how was it working with Diana? MartnBurke: she did all the work/ga RELM Muse: LOL Such a gentleman! DianaBurke: oops! forgot the ga DianaBurke: I didn't do all the work. RELM Muse: You both were well-known filkers in the past -- anything new coming up? DianaBurke: we're hoping to put out CDs of Marty's music, but no time at the moment RELM Muse: That would be great! MartnBurke: can't sing or play anymore. RELM Muse: Yeah, tell me about it. For those of you who don't know,... DianaBurke: But there's so much recorded it would be possible with time and money. T83BIRD: Bummer, Marty. RELM Muse: Marty had a cerebellar accident, like my strokes, so he doesn't type quite as fast anymore. RELM Muse: And I think the filk community would jump in to help. RELM Muse: Diana, tell us about the newest book -- what's it about? DianaBurke: Marty's son would head up the project, but he's short on time these days, too DianaBurke: Latest book is #2 in the new Nickelodeon Allen Strange series DianaBurke: called "The Arubii Invasion" out in February ga RELM Muse: I'm not familiar with that show -- what's it about? DianaBurke: Allen is an energy alien who stowed away on a ship and was stranded on Earth DianaBurke: He takes human form and lives in attic of Robbie (girl) and Josh's house DianaBurke: Mondays and Wednesday at 8:30 EDT DianaBurke: ga RELM Muse: Neat! It sounds like an interesting show. I'll have to check it out. T83BIRD: Seems like the YA's will eat that one up, Diana. Strassa: HI ROOM RELM Muse: Hi Strassa! T83BIRD: Hi Strassa RELM Chip: Hi, Strass. RELM Muse: For those coming in late, Diana G. Gallagher RELM Muse: and Martin Burke are here in guest chat RELM Muse: tonight. Diana writes young adult TV-based RELM Muse: SF and Marty co-authored a recent Voyager RELM Muse: book. DianaBurke: Muse: it's quite entertaining Strassa: HI RELM Muse: Diana, which of the shows do you like to write for best? Strassa: DID SAMMI EVER GO TO PRISON RELM Chip: Strass, would you mind lowering the Caps Lock? :) DianaBurke: I actually liked ST best, but the YA series has been cancelled Strassa: k RELM Chip: It's a little hard to read in all caps. :) RELM Chip: Thanks, Strass. :) RELM Muse: Strassa, this is not the Days of Our Lives chat. :) Strassa: no prob DianaBurke: Sabrina is fun, but comedy is hard! Strassa: ohhhhhhhhh RELM Muse: Really? I'm surprised. I thought ST YA would be particularly big. T83BIRD: Hi Chip RELM Muse: Yes, I love Sabrina. Watch her every week. DianaBurke: I also really liked the Alex Mack series and hope Minstrel continues it RELM Chip: 'Lo. T8. :) DianaBurke: So did everyone! RELM Muse: If you have a question for Diana or Marty, RELM Muse: please go ahead and ask. :) T83BIRD: Muse and Diana, my wife Bonnie won't miss an original ep of Sabrina. Omegawidow: Hi Chip. DianaBurke: T8: I think it's a hoot. Love writing Aunt Hilda and Salem especially T83BIRD: Go for it, Diana! RELM Muse: What's the hardest part of writing YA? MartnBurke: I love Salem DianaBurke: Young Adult is for young teens 12 and up... some series like a lot of hip fashion and jargon DianaBurke: I'd rather just write great stories T83BIRD: I like him too, Marty. RELM Muse: LOL How do you study up on the hip fashion & jargon? DianaBurke: Sabrina isn't too heavy on the fashion and jargon, which is nice T83BIRD: Good, Diana. There need to be more great stories for young readers. DianaBurke: Muse: AOL DianaBurke: LOL ga RELM Muse: LOL Diana! DianaBurke: True. I just go to teen sites for latest info RELM Muse: How do you schedule your day when you write? T83BIRD: My view is that art should never be held captive to an agenda. DianaBurke: T8: currently I'm trying to sell an original middle reader series T83BIRD: Hope it flies, Diana. DianaBurke: I fit writing in where and when I can. DianaBurke: T8: me, too! RELM Muse: What would the original series be about? DianaBurke: working title is Critter Chronicles... about a seventh grade girl who discovers she has telepathic connection DianaBurke: with animals T83BIRD: Hi Omega RELM Muse: I bet that would sell well! Omegawidow: Hi T83. Nkarenfo: Diana, that's a neat one! DianaBurke: Not actual "talk" but Randi knows what they're thinking anf feeling RELM Muse: Welcome to the Other*Worlds*Cafe DianaBurke: Hi, Karen! RELM Muse: chat with Diana G. Gallagher & Marty RELM Muse: Burke! Get more info about them at keyword: RELM Muse: BOOKS > Chats & Messages > Other*Worlds* RELM Muse: Cafe > Star Trek Author... T83BIRD: Sorry, Om, was thinking of what to say to Diana. Hi Nk Nkarenfo: Hi, T83! DianaBurke: I set the series in central Florida... lots of different animal life to work with Nkarenfo: Diana, Marty, it's great to see you! RELM Muse: Diana, do you make a living from writing, or like most SF authors, is it just... RELM Muse: part of your income? DianaBurke: Muse: make a living for past three years Gandalara: That's considered successful :) RELM Muse: Wonderful! That's really great! DianaBurke: Gan: yes. I'm very lucky T83BIRD: Hi Gand Gandalara: :::waving::: MartnBurke: hi karen RELM Muse: Do you work closely with an editor when you write? Gandalara: Sorry - I came in late, but, did Diana also write the new Sabrina movie coming out? T83BIRD: If you don't, I'll be surprised. DianaBurke: Muse: I bounce premise ideas off editor and then move on to an outline when we hit on one we both like DianaBurke: then after outline is approved by prodco (production company) I write the book pretty mush on my own Omegawidow: The reptile farms down in Florida should make for interesting communication. :) DianaBurke: much DianaBurke: Gan: no... T83BIRD: Kak should hear this. RELM Muse: Have you written for the shows, or just the books? DianaBurke: Omega: 2nd Critter book deals with a boa constrictor loose in the school Gandalara: Eeeww Nkarenfo: Whoa, Diana, you could eventially take the series on the road! DianaBurke: rival school's mascot LOL RELM Muse: LOL We had a boa constrictor when I was a teen. Omegawidow: Sounds like a fun story. :) DianaBurke: Karen: that would be cool RELM Chip: What's wrong with boa constrictors, Gand? :) DianaBurke: Muse: I'll remember that when I need infio! Gandalara: :::feet curling up off the floor::: RELM Chip: Herpe-wimp. RELM Muse: LOL T83BIRD: They make me queasy, too, Gand. E cat s: boa constrictor holds sixth grade for ransom: live free or die Gandalara: LOL RELM Muse: LOL E! RELM Chip: LOL E T83BIRD: Hi E LOL DianaBurke: A Minstrel editor is interested and the submission went to her early this week Nkarenfo: LOlolol DianaBurke: hope it sells! RELM Muse: That's great! You'll have to let us know how it goes! E cat s: hi :) DianaBurke: definitely Nkarenfo: Super, Diana!~ DianaBurke: E: boa terrorizes 7th graders! RELM Muse: When you write in the show's universe, are you limited as to what you can do? DianaBurke: Muse: to an extent. prodco's get final say E cat s: aha.. more adult appeal? DianaBurke: E: not really. geared to 11 year olds Omegawidow: Meanwhile boa is actually hanging on the floor cringing at all the feet running by? :) RELM Muse: I know with the adult ST, they can't change the characters very much. E cat s: lol what fun to write RELM Muse: LOL Omega! DianaBurke: Muse: no. with Nickelodeon there are definite dos and don'ts E cat s: rofl Nkarenfo: E, watch out for the boa! DianaBurke: Omega: you got it. poor snake just wants to go home! LOL RELM Muse: For those coming in late, Diana G. Gallagher RELM Muse: and Martin Burke are here in guest chat RELM Muse: tonight. Diana writes young adult TV-based RELM Muse: SF and Marty co-authored a recent Voyager RELM Muse: book. RELM Muse: If you have a question for Diana or Marty, RELM Muse: please go ahead and ask. :) E cat s: :-:~ T83BIRD: To me the only safe boa is a feather boa. Gandalara: LOL RELM Muse: LOL T8 DianaBurke: LOL T83BIRD: thx all Nkarenfo: Marty, which Voyager did you co-author? RELM Muse: Hi Sura! Hi Rowr! MartnBurke: chance factor Nkarenfo: Ah, cool! RowrBasil: hello Muse MartnBurke: /ga Suraika: Hi Muse, thanks! DianaBurke: That was a fun animal book to write, too T83BIRD: Hi Sura RELM Muse: Diana, what advice would you give to people who want to write? DianaBurke: almost all of 10 creatures used were depicted or mentioned in ST eps DianaBurke: Muse: write, write, re-write, read, write, re-write and don't give up MartnBurke: fooz rules! T83BIRD: I've told my students, Diana, that it takes whatever it takes. DianaBurke: LOl Marty. Fooz the Talarian spider was our favorite animal in Chance Factor RELM Muse: LOL! DianaBurke: T8: right. Gandalara: I thought he was a Foozball player :) MartnBurke: lol DianaBurke: Fooz belonged to Endar... as a teen. appeared as grown father in "Suddenly Human" T83BIRD: LOL Gand RELM Muse: Diana, do you have any say in the book covers? DianaBurke: None, Muse RELM Muse: Do you like them? RELM Muse: Hi Robina! RobinaY: hey! DianaBurke: Robina!!! T83BIRD: Hi Robina RobinaY: :waving!: I'm here, Finally!!!!!!!! DianaBurke: Muse: I have liked my ST covers a lot DianaBurke: funny story there, though.... DianaBurke: with The Chance Factor Nkarenfo: :::hi, Robina!::: RELM Muse: Hi Tick! RobinaY: hey, Karen! RobinaY: :giggling... : DianaBurke: In Chace Factor outline we used a three headed Aldebaran serpent DianaBurke: but paramount said we couldn't because the Aldebaran serpent has no body TickrTockr: Hi DianaBurke: so we changed it to a one headed alien dinosaur.... T83BIRD: Hi Tickr DianaBurke: but no one told the cover artist! Gandalara: Oy! T83BIRD: Ouch. RELM Muse: LOL So you ended up with a character that wasn't in the book? Suraika: LoL DianaBurke: So the manuscript is aprroved with the dinosaur... RELM Muse: And why couldn't you have a being without a body? DianaBurke: and the cover is apporved with the three headed reptile DianaBurke: Muse: had to be a riding animal TickrTockr: ::grin:: RELM Muse: Oh, I see. :) DianaBurke: the cover went to press and we were faced with changing the manuscript Gandalara: Think it would've been easier to change the cover :/ DianaBurke: so we came up with a creture with three heads... but one brain at the base of the necks. Omegawidow: LOL, a bodiless riding animal. DianaBurke: so the heads operated as appendages like arms RobinaY: i think that was a clever idea :) RELM Muse: Wait, it walked on it's heads? RobinaY: (lol!) DianaBurke: Muse: no...! DianaBurke: Walked on four feet... but to simplify the revision... we kept one brain and personality... with three necks DianaBurke: and heads Omegawidow: So you'd be riding its brain, then? RELM Muse: Oh, I see. Omegawidow: :) DianaBurke: :) T83BIRD: Ah, so. RELM Muse: How outlandish can your aliens be? Do they have to be something they could.. DianaBurke: One head on look out, while one grazes and one gets petted :) RELM Muse: do with makeup if they wanted to use them on TV? Omegawidow: Actually, I like that solution. :) DianaBurke: Muse: no... great thing about books,. No budget to worry about RELM Muse: Cool! DianaBurke: or special effects considerations T83BIRD: Great, isn't it, Diana? ChrisJFle: heya RELM Muse: Hi Chris! T83BIRD: Hi Chris DianaBurke: T8: ?? what? Gandalara: Best SFX are made in your brain anyway :) T83BIRD: That you don't have SFX considerations. RELM Muse: For those coming in late, Diana G. Gallagher RELM Muse: and Martin Burke are here in guest chat RELM Muse: tonight. Diana writes young adult TV-based RELM Muse: SF and Marty co-authored a recent Voyager Gandalara: Except for big booms........ :) RELM Muse: book. RELM Muse: If you have a question for Diana or Marty, RELM Muse: please go ahead and ask. :) DianaBurke: T8: yes, it is. Free rein as long as you can "scientifically" support it RELM Muse: Gand has a thing for BOOMs. :) Nkarenfo: LOLOL, SFX in my briane don;t work!!! DianaBurke: LOl Karen Nkarenfo: And i can't spell either! Suraika: night all - see you later. ChrisJFle: scientific support in Trek? is that actually nessary? Gandalara: Night Sura :) RobinaY: lol Karen (sorry!) Nkarenfo: Yes, Chris! T83BIRD: Nite Sura ChrisJFle: nite sura RELM Muse: Diana, Chris asked if scientific support is really necessary -- is.. Nkarenfo: Night Sura! DianaBurke: Chris: I guess that depends on the writer. I like to make things feasible RELM Muse: it something you need to be really accurate with? Omegawidow: Night Suraika. GRENDALS1: would completely ignore trek if it wasent quasi scientific DianaBurke: Muse: better if you can be T83BIRD: Necessary or not, Chris, I'm glad it's there. Hi GREN ChrisJFle: well, the reason i asked is that in ths tv show they usually resort to a string of technobabble GRENDALS1: Hi T83, Gand!! DianaBurke: Chris: true... but they do call on current theories and such now and then Gandalara: Hi Gren! :) DianaBurke: multiverse and Chaos theory for example MartnBurke: gatling guns in space won't fly DianaBurke: SO true, Marty! ChrisJFle: course, that actually makes show more fun, nitpicking wise DianaBurke: but there were a lot of BOOOMS on Armegeddon RELM Muse: LOL Gandalara: T83BIRD: Diana, have they ever considered using the omniverse concept? RELM Helio: Evening, folks RobinaY: lol Nkarenfo: Marty, LOLOL RobinaY: :waving 2 Marty!: GRENDALS1: Booms are Good... RELM Muse: Hi Helio! T83BIRD: Hi Helio Gandalara: Hi Helio! ChrisJFle: hi helio GRENDALS1: HiHelio DianaBurke: T8: there was a Worf ep on TNG that dealt with Multiverse theory. ChrisJFle: yea, i remember that one Omegawidow: Hi Helio. T83BIRD: Not Multiverse, Muse. Ominverse. DianaBurke: Hi, Helio Nkarenfo: Hey, helio! T83BIRD: Sorry, Diana. RELMShadow: Hi Helio. :) T83BIRD: Hi Shadow RELM Helio: ::waving:: RobinaY: hi, Helio! DianaBurke: T8: not familar with omniverse theory? RELMShadow: Hi T8. :) RELM Muse: T8, give us a brief explanation. :) T83BIRD: Diana, Omniverse is all the universes that were, are, or ever will be. DianaBurke: same as multiverse then ChrisJFle: like tramlafodorians? Gandalara: I thought it was poetry in that old magazine..... :) RELM Muse: Let me tell you folks about our chat tomorrow: T83BIRD: Multiverse as it was given to me is all the universes that are now. RELM Muse: Jodi Foster and 'Contact' were the DianaBurke: Gan: LOL RELM Muse: exception, and not the rule. Special RELM Muse: Effects are usually the most talked-about RELM Muse: when it comes to filmed SF. But what about RELM Muse: the maligned, the never-taken-seriously, RELM Muse: and always the disparaging words ... RELM Muse: the poor actors of any SF endeavor. Join RELM Muse: RELM Astra in a discussion, and probably RELM Muse: big-time dissing, of SF Actors. RELM Muse: Diana, do you do book tours? DianaBurke: T8: not as I understand it... but I'm not a scientist T83BIRD: That's what makes horse races, I guess. DianaBurke: yep DianaBurke: Muse: no. I do signings when I travel if I can DianaBurke: but we don't travel much these days RELM Muse: Does Nickelodeon promote the books, or just the publisher? DianaBurke: Nickelodeon does a little, but not much RELM Muse: (Ha! Tell me about it! I got to Worldcon this year, and it was exhausting. Baltimore.. RobinaY: Diana--but u'r planning 2 b at Conquest next yr, if possible, right? :) RELM Muse: turns out to be actively hostile to the gimp on the street.) DianaBurke: Robina: maybe. RobinaY: Muse-oh, i missed Worldcon! :( RobinaY: Diana- :) E cat s: lol, Gand T83BIRD: For the control that N wants, they should give you more promo help. DianaBurke: robina: we'll certainly try! DianaBurke: T8: books have been slow catching on RobinaY: Diana-- I know :) MartnBurke: i sure understand gimp ok--lol:) RELM Muse: Do you think it's because kids are so used to TV? T83BIRD: Figures, unfortunately. Omegawidow: Time for me to be going. Good night. ChrisJFle: could be, muse T83BIRD: Nite Omega ChrisJFle: nite omega DianaBurke: Muse: Kids who read the books love them... but it takes awhile for word to get around Nkarenfo: Night Omega! DianaBurke: books are selling great T83BIRD: Hi Lad RobinaY: Diana--woohoo! LadMike: Hello Bird.... DianaBurke: Lad: absolutely. I have some name recognition with 12 year olds... DianaBurke: which should help sell my original series RELM Muse: LOL Well, it's a good audience. Maybe you could get the books into.. LadMike: Well you're hooking them at the right age :) Nkarenfo: Diana, SF's answer to Judy Blume! RELM Muse: some kind of school program. Can you still buy books from Scholastic? DianaBurke: LOL Karen RobinaY: Karen-I like that! : RobinaY: er, :) RELM Muse: Oh, good phrase, Karen! T83BIRD: And a good answer, too, Nk. E cat s: Hi, Phx DianaBurke: Muse: I've done local book fair signings... but TV related books don't get action from schools Nkarenfo: And that's what I'll tell all my customers, too! T83BIRD: Hi Phx Phx8: Hi E! Phx8: Hi! RELM Muse: Hi OMAN! Hi Phx! DianaBurke: And that's too bad because the books are generally well written and good DianaBurke: not just mine LadMike: I started reading SF/F around that age...:::::mumbling something about 30some yrs. ago:::: RELM Muse: I'd think if they had good plots, they'd like them. Good way to segue into books. DianaBurke: Lad: I can relate Phx8: These split screens drive me a little crazy. ChrisJFle: Diana: why don't the schools like tv based books? wouldn't that help kids to read? RELM Muse: LOL Mike! I started reading when I was 5, so 38 years now. DianaBurke: Muse: for kids who don't like to read, it helps to be able to know the characters, etc RobinaY: Phx8--get PowerTools; u can 'unsplit' the room as if u were in a regular chat room ChrisJFle: wow, only 10 years for me! RobinaY: LadMike: Comics of the '60's were an intro... DianaBurke: Chris: I would think so... but book fairs have almost all original work RELM Muse: For those coming in late, Diana G.
